I've read on the forum that tx power is hard coded but I'm not sure if it's hard coded to max out based on u.s.regulations or specific to the region bought. Basically I'm trying to work out if DD wrt will help me with WiFi range before installing and loosing my settings because it's terrible on stock firmware. Big thanks for everyone's help. Tx- power is a measure of how strong the signal is transmitted. The best setting is the minimum level necessary to keep the signal with the boundaries of the WiFi’s location.

I have a third party connection software running on my pc and it says 55% signal strength, but dd-wrt says only 20%. I think I'll go with dd-wrt's signal estimate, because my download and only goes up to about 5mBps.
The optimal Tx-power is the LOWEST that's still adequate for your needs. Better to reduce electrosmog than to increase it. I've reduced the Tx-power of my own router to 5, by the way. On my laptops I've reduced the Tx-power of the wireless chipsets to 5 as well (only possible in Linux, as far as I know). Fine for my needs.

Both on the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz (VHT80 - 161 LL-6) the transmit power is capping out at 24dbm (250mW) under United States regulatory which should allow for up to 30dbm (1W). I noticed this when I realized the range drop between stock and dd-wrt.
